Alright I'm the second reporter on the scene, much thanks to the first reporter. Ron got clipped today. He's banged up, broken foot, bunged up knee - the good news is we get to keep him. And if it matters, there's one less Vespa in the world. I just spoke with him, it seems like another case of a cage not paying attention. So keep your eyes open out there guys and assume that every car can hit you and will. Have an escape plan, it can, like in this case, save your life.

Ron, The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup, but Maxwell House is good to the last drop. You decide which coffee tin can best hold your crutches. Unfortunately they don't make beer in a big enough can. With feet, it's better to heal well then heal fast. -Kory (often in steel toes)

Hello All... Yes I am alive. After 21 years of riding without incident I guess my number came up. I was hit by a 4 wheel driver not paying attention. He was late for work and didn't see me. Pulled out from oncoming traffic to make a left hand turn in front of me. I had about 10 feet to react in, but couldn't make it around him. so I ended up putting a GTS into the front driver side of his toyota. The bike did an endo and threw me about 30 feet. GTS is a write off. My leg got banged up as it hit the car, face hit the mirror on the way over but a new full face helmet saved me. Chest is a bit bruised up as it hit the headstock on my way over. I let go of the bars, tucked my arms in and flew. Landed about 20 feet away on my feet - broke one foot, bruised the other one up bad, then fell to my knees and banged them up pretty bad. I bounced and rolled another 10 feet from there, slid on my back to a stop. Head took a good hit on the backside but my helmet saved me from any big injury. So all in all I lost a digital camera, my laptop, helmet, a pair of jeans, my shoes, and of course a GTS. Banged up pretty bad, road rash, broken foot, sore neck and shoulder... well actually everything hurts to be honest. But I am alive to talk about it. Not at fault and I have plenty of witnesses. Spent the better part of a day in the hospital being tested, poked, prodded, xrayed, ultrasounded, and everything else that you can imagine but limped away on crutches in the end. They are going to cast the foot later in the week but the swelling is too bad at this point. So all in all I got really lucky. Could have been far far worse. I'll be in bed for a few days recuperating but will be riding soon enough! Thank you for all the well wishes! Please watch the other guy out there and be careful riding!!!!!

Hindsight is 20/20, but one can never get enough screaming done at the scene of an accident.
I don't envy your next few weeks. Tell me what happens on Maury.

Hi Ron, Damn! Sorry to hear about the accident, that is horrible. I can only think that it could have been much worst if you weren't such an experienced rider. When I ride I look at EVERYONE as my enemy and they are out to kill me. I think it's one of the only ways to survive on 2 wheels. I hope you get well soon, but DO take your time and do it right. Damn my heart goes out to you.
Today I witnessed a Rider go down about 200 yards away from me. The car beside him crowded him, He panicked and ended up in the sand, gravel and grass that the City had cleaned onto the roads earlier. He and his Rider went down and slid for about 10 yards before hitting the curb, his chaps were ripped right off him and his helmet was a rightoff, but he got up, the passenger was pinned under the bike but once it was righted she was ok, just a few bruises. It was a big cruiser with under 100 km on the odometer. After about 10 minutes they were on their way, I hope they got home ok, they guy was pretty messed up.
Ron take care and rest up, there will be lots of riding when your all better.
Cheers Angelo

Holy Crap! I'm glad you will be ok. I was just in the Okanagan a few weeks ago for work, and was looking forward to dropping by the store for a real coffee finally - then we ended up bypassing Kelowna. It's a relief that it didn't turn out to be my last chance to drop by! How's the family taking the accident? Do you get to spend more quality time at home with the babies now? Sorry to hear about the GTS. Do you get a discount on a replacement? And thanks for the full-face helmet details - it's good to have a reminder. Hope you recover quickly and fully.

Ron - best wishes for a speedy recovery. Let us know if we should take up a collection for any "naughty nurse" services you may require.
It's a sobering reminder to the rest of us when an experienced rider like Ron gets clipped - be careful out there boys and girls!
Dammit - where's the sintered armorgel riding gear that goes into Michelen Man Mode that I was promised in Snow Crash?

Our battered friend just came by and we went for a car ride to look at a bike. It needs work. Where the car touched it: Document holder, sans papers: The Slider: Our hero (with getaway sticks) and the ride:

Ron, I'd like to offer you an honorary ASC membership. You've ridden like a true Albertan, and lived to tell the tale!
Glad you're okay. By the looks of it, things may have been a hell of a lot worse.
