On Nov29th, the Toronto Moto Scooter Club led by our own Quentin presented our case that scooters and motorcycles should be allowed to legally ride in our city's HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes. The city's transportation department to date has maintained that two wheeled vehicles go against the idea of HOV lanes as they only carry one passenger. Along with that they continued to claim that scooters emit more noxious emissions that an SUV. Well Quentin and two other TMSC members went to City Hall and presented the case that due to the efficiency and small foot print of our vehicles we should definitely be able to use those lanes. Also, those lanes tend to be the curb lanes which are generally safer for scooterists to ride in particularly if they are the smaller engined 50 cc type. Well we were victorious today and now Scooterists in the city of Toronto have spoken and have been heard.
They did rule in our favour, in a unanimous decision yesterday afternoon.
they even put the motion forward for the ministry of transportation to be contacted to approach the other communities of Ontario to get on the bandwagon and follow Toronto's lead.
This was a complete reversal of the motion before council which was to ban motor-scooters and motorcycles from these lanes.
the California rulings helped us tremendously in this area- thanks guys.
the other issue that helped us was a safety issue with cars running red lights in the city, which was still in the minds of the counselors when we presented our information.
I'm sure it will take a little while for everything to formulate.
Council was also impressed with our ability to pass information onto the scooter community at large with no expense occurred by the city.
(as we demonstrated with the free scooter parking by-law.)
those Kudo's belong to sites that allow us to pass on this information to fellow scooterists.
This ruling when fully implemented in Toronto, will help it be put into practice across Canada.
It will also put scooters as a viable means of transportation clearly in the minds of those who were unaware- especially when we zoom by them sitting alone in their cars in gridlock as we use those HOV lanes.
